On 7th March, 1915, the 1st Royal West Kent battalion of 13 Brigade, 5th Division moved into the front line at Zillebeke in the Ypres salient where they remained until relieved on 10th March. At intervals during 8th March, the day on which Walter Mott was killed, the enemy light artillery opened up on the battalion’s trenches but this was met by a quick response from the British guns and was short lived. Also during the day rapid rifle fire was directed against the enemy’s trenches but the retaliatory artillery fire that followed caused the parapet of the trench held by A Company to be destroyed resulting in a number of casualties. |
